At Wonderwood Floors we are extremely careful where we source our products. We are, and have always been, aware of the need to sustain the forests. We will only use reputable sources for our timber. The sustainability of our forests is something that is much more important than selling anybody a wood floor.

The forests act as living filters, removing harmful carbon from the air and replacing it with oxygen. They are, in effect, the lungs of the planet.

Through proper management and correct utilisation of resources our forestry will remain healthy and will continue to proliferate.

In reality one of the best ways to manage timber forests is to harvest the old growth timber at a point in each tree’s life just before it starts to die from the inside out. If left too long a tree will start to rot away from the inside. The time to harvest the tree is just before this starts to happen. There are many benefits to managing a forest this way:

1. The old growth trees take up a lot of room within the forest, as their root system spreads far and wide taking nutrients from the ground to the detriment of any new growth.
2. The timber yield from old growth timber is much higher meaning that fewer trees need to be cut down.
3. The cutting down of one old growth tree leaves enough room for scores of new saplings to be replanted in its place.
4. Saplings produce much more oxygen than older, more established trees do. This is partly due to them being much more productive because there is more growth happening.

Properly managed forests like those in North America, Canada and Northern Europe now have 82% more hardwoods growing than the same forests did some 40 years ago.

The important truth is that wherever we source our raw material from it will be from forests that are properly managed with a view to the future.
